Genuine BMW part 23 12 1 228 328: Shaft seal. The number stamped on the part is 23121228328; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1228328. You will find it on our Transmission shelf, under Bearing in housing, sealing rings. It supersedes the older number 1222972, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 8677738.

It fits every E36 body style (318i, 318ti, 320i, 323i and 325i, 1992–1999), with the M40, M42, M43, M44, M50 or M52 engines — and the European-market versions. It also fits the E46 sedan and coupe (316i, 1999–2004), with the M43, N40, N42 or N45 engines.

BMW draws it on 5 diagrams, among them S5D...G housing + mounting parts (23_0234) and S5D...G housing + mounting parts (23_0235). It weighs about 10 g (under 0.1 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
