E36 & E46 Clutch Replacement
Clutch, flywheel, release bearing and hydraulics for manual E36s and E46s — the dual-mass flywheel checked while it is apart.
A clutch job on an E36 or E46 means taking the gearbox out, so it is the time to do everything behind it: the clutch disc and pressure plate, the release bearing and arm, the pilot bearing, and — on cars with one — the dual-mass flywheel, which wears too. The rear main seal and the gearbox mounts are easy to reach then as well.
We quote the clutch and tell you what else we recommend while it is apart, so you choose once.
Signs it needs doing
- The engine revs but the car doesn’t pick up (slipping)
- The clutch bites at the very top of the pedal
- Chatter or shudder pulling away
- A rattle at idle that stops when you press the pedal
- A soft or sinking pedal (hydraulics)
What the job covers
- Clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing
- Flywheel inspected (resurfaced or replaced as quoted)
- Pilot bearing and release arm
- Slave cylinder and fluid checked
- Rear main seal and mounts checked while the gearbox is out
What it costs
Every car is different at this age, so we price it once we have seen yours. Yes. You get a written estimate by email with a private link, and you approve it job by job — or decline what you don’t want. We won’t go over the estimate you approved by more than Colorado allows (10% or 25 dollars, whichever is less) without asking you first.
Questions
Can you use a used part from your own shelf?
Yes, when we have one that fits your car and you agree to it. We sell used E36 and E46 parts on this site; a used part goes on the estimate marked as used, with its condition, before you approve anything.
Will I know the price before you start?
