This is a genuine BMW basic control unit DME (exchange unit), part number 12 14 0 028 578. The number stamped on the part is 12140028578; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 0028578. BMW's catalog calls it “EXCH Basic control unit DME”. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Other Engine Electrical System parts. It supersedes the older number 1429761, so a part carrying that number is the same part.

It fits every E36 body style (318i, 1992–1999), with the M43 engine — and the European-market versions.

BMW draws it on 6 diagrams, among them Uncoded DME control unit (12_0430) and Uncoded DME control unit (12_1979). It weighs about 444 g (1.0 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
