This is a genuine BMW gasket Asbestos Free, part number 23 12 1 222 356. The number stamped on the part is 23121222356; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1222356. You will find it on our Transmission shelf, under Bearing in housing, sealing rings. It supersedes the older number 1490103, so a part carrying that number is the same part.
BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.
BMW draws it on 15 diagrams, among them Getrag 242 Housing+attaching Parts (23_0122) and Getrag 242 Housing+attaching Parts (23_0123). It weighs about 4 g (under 0.1 lb). It also comes in BMW kit Gasket Set F Four Speed Gearbox "af" (9065645).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
