The number stamped on the part is 84106978533; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 6978533. BMW's catalog calls it “EXCH Telematics Control Unit”. You will find it on our Instruments & Electronics shelf, under Car telephone, built-in. It supersedes the older number 6946011, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 9187926.
It fits every E46 body style (320i, 323i, 325i and 328i, 1999–2006), with the M52 or M54 engines — and the European-market versions.
BMW draws it on 9 diagrams, among them Single parts, SA 638, trunk (84_0494) and Single parts, SA 638, trunk (84_0512). It weighs about 912 g (2.0 lb).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
