The number stamped on the part is 12311726055; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1726055. BMW's catalog calls it “EXCH generator”. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older numbers 1720878, 1722532 and 1726248, so a part carrying any of them is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 1722568.
BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.
BMW draws it on the Alternator Parts 90a (12_0438) diagram. It weighs about 6.2 kg (14 lb).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
