-- View BMW DiagramSee this part on the official exploded view→Generator (exchange unit) — a genuine BMW part, number 12 31 1 721 923. The number stamped on the part is 12311721923; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1721923. BMW's catalog calls it “EXCH generator”. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older number 1721778, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 1739421.
It fits the E36 sedan and coupe (318i, 1992–1999), with the M40 or M42 engines — and the European-market versions.
BMW draws it on 6 diagrams, among them Alternator Parts 90a (12_0433) and Alternator Parts 90a (12_0485). BMW lists the quantity used as “as required”. It weighs about 6.2 kg (14 lb).
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
