Genuine BMW part 12 31 1 727 756: Carbon brush set. The number stamped on the part is 12311727756; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1727756. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older number 1715168, so a part carrying that number is the same part.

It fits the E36 sedan and coupe (318i, 320i and 325i, 1992–1999), with the M40, M42 or M50 engines — and the European-market versions.

BMW draws it on 121 diagrams, among them Alternator Parts 90a (12_0400) and Alternator Parts 65a (12_0484). It weighs about 6 g (under 0.1 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
