Backup ring — a genuine BMW part, number 23 11 1 203 721. The number stamped on the part is 23111203721; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 1203721. You will find it on our Transmission shelf, under Housing with cover. It supersedes the older number 1204214, so a part carrying that number is the same part.

BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.

BMW draws it on 19 diagrams, among them Getrag 242 Cover+attach.Parts (23_0313) and Getrag 242 Cover+attach.Parts (23_0314). It weighs about 95 g (0.2 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
