Voltage regulator — a genuine BMW part, number 12 31 7 540 655. The number stamped on the part is 12317540655; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 7540655. You will find it on our Electrical shelf, under Alternator with motor and mounting. It supersedes the older numbers 7523065 and 7541853, so a part carrying any of them is the same part.

It fits every E46 body style (316i, 316ti, 318i and 318ti, 2001–2004), with the N40, N42, N45 or N46 engines.
