The number stamped on the part is 71606855562; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 6855562. You will find it on our Tools shelf, under Other Equipment Parts parts. It supersedes the older number 6853417, so a part carrying that number is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 6856747.
BMW's catalog records no E36 or E46 it is fitted to; it belongs to other BMW models.
BMW draws it on 3 diagrams, among them Control unit, trailer module (61_2349) and Control unit, trailer module (61_2704). It weighs about 70 g (0.2 lb). It also comes in BMW kits Trailer Hitch Kit (2157704) and Retrofit kit, rear transportation system (2218149) and 7 more.
We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
