The number stamped on the part is 11257540063; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 7540063. You will find it on our Engine shelf, under Piston with rings and pin. It supersedes the older numbers 7506023 and 7531563, so a part carrying any of them is the same part. BMW has since replaced it with 7548035.
It fits every E46 body style (316i, 316ti, 318i and 318ti, 2001–2004), with the N40, N42, N45 or N46 engines.
BMW draws it on the Crankshaft-Pistons (11_3186) diagram. BMW lists the quantity used as “as required”. It weighs about 410 g (0.9 lb).
