This is a genuine BMW complete hydraulic belt tensioner, part number 11 28 7 838 797. The number stamped on the part is 11287838797; BMW's catalog files it under the short number 7838797. You will find it on our Engine shelf, under Other Engine parts. It supersedes the older number 1722789, so a part carrying that number is the same part.

It fits every E36 body style (320i, 323i, 325i, 328i and M3, 1992–1999), with the M50, M52, S50 or S52 engines — and the European-market versions. It also fits the E46 sedan, coupe, convertible and touring (320i, 323i and 325i, 1999–2006), with the M52 or M54 engines — and the European-market versions.

BMW draws it on 16 diagrams, among them Belt Drive Water Pump/Alternator (11_1344) and Belt Drive Water Pump/Alternator (11_1399). It weighs about 700 g (1.5 lb).

We have not had one on the shelf yet. Request it and we will tell you when one comes off a car.
